Fire breaks out at notorious construction site

Fire breaks out at notorious construction siteA fire broke out in Hanoi, on Saturday morning, at the accident-prone construction site of Vietnam’s tallest building.

The fire started at around 10:20 a.m. on the first floor of the 70-story Keangnam tower in Tu Liem District.

City firefighters extinguished the flames just a few minutes later.

Choi Jae Ok, Keangnam's Administrative Officer, said that the building is still under construction and doesn't yet have a fire alarm system.

Some construction workers told Thanh Nien they did not know how to use the fire extinguishers available at the site.

The authorities are investigating the fire and assessing the damage.

South Korea’s Keangnam Enterprises Ltd. began work on the project in 2007.

When completed, the building will become Vietnam’s tallest skycraper, surpassing the current title-holder 68-story Bitexco Financial Tower in Ho Chi Minh City.

Despite its impressive height, the Keangnam project has become notorious for its poor safety record.

In March, Hanoi authorities launched an investigation into the construction site following the death of six workers – two in February and four in July 2009.

In March, a fire broke out on the 25th floor of the project.

Last month, a piece of debris fell from the site severely injuring a woman who was passing below.

Mongabay has Vietnamese-language site

Mongabay.com, a leading forest conservation and environmental news website, has launched its “rainforest” site for children in Vietnamese.

The site is available at world.mongabay.com/vietnamese.

The new site was created by Nguyen Ngoc Khanh, who translated the text from English to Vietnamese.

Khanh is a graduate of the University of California, Los Angeles. In 2005, he was among three high school students in Hanoi to take part in a wildlife study program in South Africa.

Rhett Butler, mongabay.com's founder, says he hopes the site will be used in Vietnam to educate school children, as well as adults, about forests and the importance of protecting them.

Vietnam has lost nearly all of its primary forest cover, but is fast replanting trees in some parts of the country, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

Mongabay's rainforest site for kids is now available in 33 languages - each of which has been translated by native speakers. An expanded version for adults is available in English, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified Chinese, French, German, and Japanese.

US firm launches social networking site in Vietnam

US-based software company VietTech Corporation unveiled the beta version of a social networking and microblogging site PingGadget.com and a new version of MyWorldvn.com, an educational and community website, at a press conference in Ho Chi Minh City Friday.

PingGadget allows users to communicate with one another, stay connected to what is going on around them, and build custom groups specific to their location and interests.

The microblogging site has image and video uploading capacities of 1 MB and 8 MB.

It features jobs, classifieds, events, nightlife, music, and volunteering opportunities at various locations but does not have a platform to support blogs.

“We’re just getting started and this beta release formally kicks things off. We plan on working closely with our users over the next few months to gain valuable feedback and maintain a strong innovation schedule for the platform,” Nguyen Minh Tri, president and CEO of VietTech and co-founder of MyWorldvn and PingGadget, said.

“[Later] we will add some applications suitable for Vietnamese users.

“In Vietnam, social networks are becoming a daily habit. These sites help users connect with each other and share things easily anywhere and anytime.”

PingGadget launched in the US last month.

MyWorldvn.com is a popular social and educational networking site among high school and college students and young professionals in Vietnam that Tri launched in 2007.

It has 220,000 members and attracted more than 10 million hits.

MyWorldvn.com provides access to English learning, news sharing, information, blogs, images, music, and social clubs.

Both websites are free and in Vietnamese.
