Remains of US soldiers repatriated

HA NOI — A repatriation ceremony for the remains of US servicemen who died during the war in Viet Nam was held at Noi Bai International Airport yesterday.

Attending the ceremony were representatives from the Viet Nam Office for Seeking Missing Personnel, the US Ambassador to Viet Nam Michael Michalak and representatives from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command.

At the ceremony, a representative of the Vietnamese Government handed over to the US Government three boxes of remains which were recovered during the 101st Joint Field Activities from September to November 2010.

The remains were jointly reviewed and verified by Vietnamese and US forensic specialists that they could be the remains of US servicemen who went missing during the war in Viet Nam and recommended they be brought to Hawaii for further review.

The US side expressed high appreciation for the steadfast humanitarian policy and goodwill, and the increasingly efficient co-operation of the Vietnamese Government and people.

It was the 117th hand over of missing American servicemen's remains since 1973. —VNS

A repatriation ceremony for the remains of US servicemen who died during the war in Vietnam was held at Hanoi’s Noi Bai International Airport Tuesday.

Attending the ceremony were representatives from the Vietnam Office for Seeking Missing Personnel, the US Ambassador to Viet Nam Michael Michalak and representatives from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command.

At the ceremony, a representative of the Vietnamese government handed over to the US government three boxes of remains which were recovered during the 101st Joint Field Activities from September to November 2010.

Vietnam, Laos seek martyr remains

Laos’ Savannakhet province will create all favourable conditions for the central province of Quang Tri ’s Search Team 584 to search, gather and repatriate remains of Vietnamese volunteers and experts who laid down their lives in Laos.

The Savannakhet Deputy Mayor affirmed this at a working session between the two provincial leaders on this issue held in Quang Tri province’s Dong Ha city on September 8.

Quang Tri leaders also vowed to provide 100 million VND for Savannakhet province in searching, gathering and repatriating Vietnamese soldiers’ remains.

In the 2010-2011 dry season, Search Team 584 will focus on seeking and gathering Vietnamese martyrs’ remains scattering in six districts of Savannakhet province, including Sepon, Muong Nong and Muong Phin.

The team strives to gather and bring home around 40 sets of Vietnamese soldiers’ remains during the season.

The team has so far gathered and repatriated nearly 6,000 sets of remains, including 48 sets found during the 2009-2010 dry season./.

A repatriation ceremony for the remains of US serviceman who died during the war in Vietnam was held at Da Nang International Airport Tuesday.

Representatives from the Vietnam Office for Seeking Missing Personnel, US Ambassador to Viet Nam Michael Michalak and representatives from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command attended the function.

The Vietnamese government representative handed over to the US government representative three boxes of remains, which were recovered during the 100th Joint Field Activities from August to September 2010. The remains were discovered by Vietnamese citizens.

The remains were jointly reviewed by Vietnamese and American forensic specialists who concluded they might be associated with US servicemen who went missing during the war in Vietnam, and it was recommended that the remains be brought to Hawaii for further review.

Addressing the ceremony, the US government representative expressed deep gratitude and high appreciation for the steadfast humanitarian policy, goodwill and the increasingly efficient co-operation with the Vietnamese government and people.

This is the 116th hand over of American missing servicemen's remains since 1973.

Soldiers' remains found in Quang Tri

HA NOI — Tran Vinh, a resident of the central province of Quang Tri, unearthed the remains of soldiers yesterday while farming. He immediately reported the findings to the authorities of Cam Thanh town in Cam Lo District. The town's veteran and civil defence team then found many remains, including shin and arm bones and skulls. The remains and relics found were believed to belong to 158 commandos who died in an encounter against the Americans in 1968 and were buried in a mass grave. The district and authorised agencies are continuing the search for additional remains.

Korean woman dies in hotel suicide plunge

QUANG NINH — Police believe South Korean Pioun Su Yoen, 58, committed suicide when she plunged from the 6th-floor room of the Sao Mai Hotel in Ha Long City's Tuan Chau Ward late Monday afternoon.

The woman was reportedly among 19 Korean tourists who arrived at the hotel the previous day.

Traffic collision victims compensated

HA TINH — At least 26 people were injured when a coach and a truck collided on National Highway 1A in central Ha Tinh Province's Ky Anh District yesterday.

The provincial Traffic Safety Committee provided VND1 million (US$51) for each of the seriously injured and VND500,000 ($26) for the remainder. — VNS
