VN focuses int’l youth festival on AO victims

Vietnamese delegates have campaigned for Agent Orange/dioxin victims at a two-day World Festival of Youth and Students opened in Pretoria , South Africa , on Dec. 15.

The Vietnamese delegation raised the topic at all events in the framework of the festival, including workshops on Africa, Asia-Pacific region, Europe and world youth unity and solidarity.

They also handed out leaflets calling on youth organisations and the international community to support the struggle for justice for AO/dioxin victims in Vietnam .

In addition, the Vietnamese delegates held meetings and joined sports and games matches with other delegations in an effort to boost solidarity and friendship with youths from other countries worldwide.

A mobile exhibition on Vietnam was held to promote the national image, including achievements in renewal.

Also on display was the 80-year-long history of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union (HCMCYU) which highlights the vanguard and voluntary role played by the force in national construction and defence.

The HCMCYU’s First Secretary, Vo Van Thuong, said it was a good chance for Vietnamese youths to promote the national image to the international community and contribute to the world youth and students’ movement in the interest of peace, national independence, democracy and social progress.

Also on the day, Thuong was received by World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) President Tiago Vieira where the duo discussed measures to boost WFDY’S relations with the HCMCYU and the Vietnam Youth Federation.

The two sides pledged to do their best to fulfil the festival’s goal “For a World of Peace, Solidarity and Social Transformation”./.

The opening in Lucas ‘Masterpieces' Moripe Stadium included a parade of the participating nations; art performances; a torch light procession and military review.

At least 140 delegations are attending the festival which is intended to promote youth in the struggle for peace, solidarity and social transformation.

Viet Nam's delegation will explain Viet Nam Communist Party and State policies for youth at various gatherings over the next eight days.

Their focus will be on workshops to introduce Viet Nam; exhibits that show Viet Nam, the country and its people, and attending international seminars.

They will also attend bilateral meetings with youth from Cuba, North Korea and Laos.

The festival - the world's most important youth forum - is held every five years.

Sixteen have been held since the first in 1915. — VNS

Vietnam to attend World Youth Festival

A 135-member delegation from Vietnam will attend the World Festival of Youth and Students in South Africa from Dec. 12-21.

They will join about 12,000 other delegates from 110 countries and territories.

Speaking at a press conference on the festival in Hanoi on Dec. 8, Secretary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union Central Committee Pham Van Mai said the Vietnamese delegation will enhance the image of Vietnam during the renewal process and mark the contributions of youth to national construction and defence.

The festival will take the theme, “For a World of Peace, Solidarity and Social Transformation - Let's Defeat Imperialism”.

The Vietnamese delegation will host a conference on the 80th anniversary of the Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union and participate in the international tribunal against imperialism to condemn the use of chemical substances during wars, causing an aftermath unacceptable to people. The Vietnamese delegation will call on international friends and organisations to ask for justice for Vietnamese victims of Agent Orange.

Vietnam will also take part in many conferences and seminars on poverty reduction and gender equality and hold bilateral exchanges with other participating delegations./.

Vietnamese, Lao youth boost cooperation

Young people of Vietnam’s central province of Thua Thien-Hue and Salavan province of Laos gathered in Hue city on October 1-3 for a friendship exchange programme.

During the gathering, the two sides discussed and exchanged experiences in youth union work and activities for children.

The two provincial youth unions agreed to increase practical cooperative activities in the future, especially in business models, to improve income for young people.

Over the past time, the two sides worked together in the implementation of already-signed programmes and plans, and launched many activities to increase mutual understanding about the land, people and culture of the two nations.

Since 2008 the youth union in Thua Thien –Hue province conducted a wide range of voluntary activities in Salavan province such as providing free medicine, health care checks-up for local people as well as computer-skill training courses, computers and books for the Salavan provincial youth union.

Currently, 145 Lao students have studied in Thua Thien-Hue province as part of the cooperation programme between the two provinces./.

Vietnam-China Youth Festival opens

The Vietnam-China Youth Festival opened in China’s Guangxi province on Wednesday, which expects to attract more than 7,000 Chinese delegates along with 3,000 Vietnamese youths in activities spanning eight Chinese cities over five days.

Speaking at the ceremony, Chen Jiwa, Vice Secretary of the Communist Party Committee of Guangxi expressed the belief that the festival will contribute to strengthening friendship, mutual understanding and trust between the two countries’ youth and people.

Lam Phuong Thanh, Permanent Secretary of Central Committee of Ho Chi Minh Communist Youth Union, said that under the framework of the 60th anniversary of Vietnam-China diplomatic ties and Vietnam-China Friendship Year 2010, the event is an important foundation to enhance cooperative relations and promote traditional friendship between the two nations.

With the theme, “Vietnamese and Chinese youths join hands to foster friendship”, the Vietnamese delegation will visit relics that are associated with Vietnam’s revolutionary history, join activities to protect the environment and attend exchanges with local young people and seminars on young people’s business start-up to foster cooperation between the youth of the two countries.

Festival activities will take place in Liuzhou, Guilin, Beihai, Quinzhou, Fangcheng Port, Baise, Chongzuo and Nanning.
