Party leader lauds community built by overseas Vietnamese

HA NOI — Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh spoke highly of the development of the Vietnamese community abroad and their valuable contributions to national construction when meeting representatives of overseas Vietnamese who had returned for the Thang Long-Ha Noi millennial celebrations yesterday.

"The Party, State and people greatly appreciate the patriotism and valuable contributions of overseas Vietnamese," he said.

Manh said he believed overseas Vietnamese would continue their patriotism, strengthen their communities, and join forces to build a thriving Viet Nam.

He stressed that there were both opportunities and challenges facing the country at present so all Vietnamese people, both at home and abroad, must do their utmost for the common cause.

After affirming that overseas Vietnamese are integral to the nation's growth, Manh urged them to make recommendations for the draft documents to be submitted to the 11th National Party Congress as a way to contribute to the goal of fostering a rich people, a strong nation and a democratic, fair and civilised society.

The Party leaders expressed his pleasure that many overseas Vietnamese had successfully invested and done business in Viet Nam, and that a number of artists had organised exhibitions bringing attention to the country.

Representatives said they were delighted to witness Viet Nam's enormous achievements in the doi moi (renewal) process and national construction, citing the ongoing celebrations as evidence.

They thanked the Party and State for their support and promised to contribute more to the development of their home country. — VNS

HA NOI — The country's leaders attended opening ceremonies at various schools across the country this weekend to celebrate the new academic year.

Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh visited Chu Van An High School in Ha Noi on Saturday, hailing the school's achievements.

Manh congratulated the school's teachers and students on their forthcoming academic year, saying they should maintain and improve their levels of teaching and studying in order to achieve even more.

The Party leader took the opportunity to encourage the education sector to continue to improve the management and quality of education, promoting strong and comprehensive changes in the sector.

He stressed the ultimate goal of the education-training sector and socialist school system of educating pupils to have greater aspirations for the motherland.

Chu Van An is considered a cradle for outstanding students. Many students from the school have gone on to become patriotic personalities, intellectuals and leaders of the Party and State such as Ngo Gia Tu, Nguyen Van Cu and Pham Van Dong. President Ho Chi Minh visited it three times and the one hundred-year old school has been recognised as a national cultural and historical site.

On the same day, President Nguyen Minh Triet attended Thang Long Junior Secondary School in Ha Noi and beat the ceremonial drum to signal the opening of the new academic year.

Speaking to teachers and students at the school, President Triet highlighted the school's achievements over the past year.

He asked every teacher and officer at the school to uphold tradition and chalk up even greater achievements in the future, so that their school deserves to bear the name of the capital city and its glorious thousand-year history.

The State leader told the students to exert more efforts in their studies, practise good morals and actively take part in social activities.

Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan visited Xuan Hong A Primary school in northern Nam Dinh Province where former Party General Secretary Truong Chinh had studied. Doan said she hoped teachers would initiate new and advanced teaching methods despite the many difficulties they were facing. "Each teacher should be a great example for their students to follow," she said.

Doan also asked the students to continue to uphold its great tradition through hard work to improve their knowledge and life skills.

In the southern province of Binh Phuoc, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan beat the drum to open the new school year at Quang Trung High School on Saturday. Despite its recent establishment in 2002, the school has received many national awards for its excellent students and teachers and was ranked 12th out of 200 top schools, according to the Ministry of Education and Training. Over the past eight years, 100 per cent of its students have passed the national graduation exams and every year, its students achieve some of the highest scores in the country.

Nhan congratulated the school's students and teachers for their outstanding achievements. He said the school should not only be a place where students were well trained in specific subjects, but also a hub to train the country's elite. He added that it was extremely necessary to invest in facilities and infrastructure for such schools in provincial areas. — VNS

Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh Saturday attended the new school year opening ceremony at Chu Van An High School in Hanoi, hailing the school’s achievements.

General Secretary Manh congratulated the school’s teachers and students on their new academic year, saying they should maintain and promote their teaching and studying to obtain more achievements.

The Party leader on this occasion asked the education sector to continue improving management and education quality, creating strong and comprehensive changes in the sector.

Epic race across VN set for Hanoi's anniversary

Cyclists will contest a 17-day trans-Vietnam race for the 1,000th anniversary of Hanoi , the Vietnam Cycling Federation said on August 30.

The 14-stage 1,500km race from HCM City to Hanoi would begin on September 23 and end on October 9. The last time-trial stage will be held at Hoan Kiem Lake to celebrate the millennium of the capital city and the 56th anniversary of Hanoi 's liberation day on October 10th.

"It's the biggest race of the year as the country’s eye will be on the great celebration of Hanoi . We have invited foreign riders to compete in the event, which is a good opportunity for Vietnamese athletes to horn their skills," said the Federation's general secretary Doan Kim Phach.

"The Malaysian team has agreed to take part in the event and we expect more powerhouses are also eager to join a tough race," he said.

The general secretary also added the race will see around 100 athletes from 13 teams of Vietnam and foreign squads of the Republic of Korea , Mongolia and the Philippines .

"We hope to make the race successfully in the occasion of big festivals to be held in the city," Phach said.

The race organising committee will offer special awards to the overall yellow jersey (the best time rider); green jersey for the best stage finish athlete; the red jersey for the ‘King of Mountain' and white jersey, for the best young cyclist./.

Vietnam-China Youth Festival held in Guangxi

The Vietnam-China Youth Festival has been held in China’s Guangxi province, making it an outstanding event in the Vietnam-China Friendship Year 2010.

At the festival, which was held on August 28, youth from both countries received congratulatory letters from the General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV), Nong Duc Manh, and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Hu Jintao.

In his letter, General Secretary Manh reminded the young generation of the time-honoured relationship between China and Vietnam, founded and nurtured by President Ho Chi Minh and President Mao Zedong.

The relationship is a very important factor on both countries’ road to socialism, he said, adding that it is manifested vividly in comprehensive strategic cooperation partnership.

He expressed his hope that the young generation of both countries will make great efforts to strengthen the ties.

In his letter General Secretary Hu Jintao said he hoped the two countries’ youth will contribute their strength to national constructions, writing glorious histories on development of friendship and comprehensive strategic cooperate partnership between Vietnam and China .

Addressing the event, Ho Duc Viet, Politburo member and Head of the CPV Central Committee’s Commission for Organisation, emphasised that the Vietnamese Party, State, and people considered the festival to be one of the most important activities to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Vietnam-China diplomatic ties and the Vietnam-China Friendship Year 2010 and said it would strengthen the Vietnam-China relationship.

More activities will be celebrated by Vietnamese and Chinese Youth Unions to nurture the ties between the young generations of both countries, Viet added.

Li Yuanchao, Politburo member and Head of the Organisation of Department of the CPC Central Committee, expressed his belief that the festival would help contribute to further strengthening, tightening the friendship between two peoples, particularly young generation.

Participants had the chance to enjoy a gala night with a performance of traditional folk music by artists from both countries.

The warm and friendly festival concluded with a fireworks display and a performance of the Vietnam-China friendship song./.

Party chief visits General Vo Nguyen Giap

Party General Secretary Nong Duc Manh visited and congratulated General Vo Nguyen Giap on August 23 in Hanoi on the occasion of the General’s one hundredth birthday (August 25).

Party General Secretary Manh, on behalf of leaders of the Party, State, Army and people, thanked and spoke highly of General Giap’s significant contributions to the revolutionary cause of the Party and the nation.

“General Giap is forever a bright example, an excellent disciple of President Ho Chi Minh, the eldest brother of the armed forces, a eminent strategist and commander-in-chief admired by international friends and a source of great pride for the Vietnamese Party, State and people,” Manh stressed.

The General Secretary wished General Giap good health and longevity and said he hoped the general would make more contributions to the Party and the country.

Following elder generations, the Party, State and people of Vietnam are determined to seize opportunities and overcome challenges to speed up national industrialisation and modernisation, to firmly build and and defend the socialist nation, Manh affirmed.
