British Council holds activities to celebrate city’s birthday

The British Council is organising a wide range of events designed to celebrate the 1,000 th birthday of Thang Long-Hanoi and promote cultural links between the United Kingdom and Vietnam throughout October.

The activities include an exhibition entitled Long Bien “In a City”, which explores the fabric of society in the Long Bien area through innovative photography, film and story telling; an auction of some of the best Vietnamese visual arts to raise funds for young artists; a fashion and design show and a “Global citizens” competition for 65,000 school children across Vietnam.

An international competition will be also held in the Millennium month to honour young Vietnamese talent in production, distribution, journalism, marketing, promotion and artistic management.

British Council Country Director Robin Rickard expressed his hope that the events will contribute to delivering a message that while Hanoi is one of the most ancient capitals of Asia , it is also a modern city blessed with natural scenery and historical beauty nurtured by a splendid unique and enduring culture.

Operating in over 100 nations and territories, the British Council began its operation in the areas of education, English language and art in Vietnam in 1993./.

British Council helps improve vocational training

The British Council will help Vietnamese workers hone their skills in preparations for the ASEAN Skills Competition to be held in Bangkok, Thailand from Nov. 14-24.

The council in coordination with the General Vocational Training Department has invited experts from the vocational skills organisation of the UK to Vietnam under an MoU between the British Council and the Ministry of Labour, War Invalids and Social Affairs.

Between Sept. 20-24, the UK experts will help the Vietnamese side to build a training programme and implement it with Vietnamese contestants.

They will also share experiences in vocational training with local trainers.

A seminar on developing training, teaching and learning methods, assessment techniques, as well as policies and experiences in vocational development will be held in Hilton Hotel in Hanoi on Sept. 24.

The British Council began operation in Vietnam in 1993 and has organised many activities to help Vietnam in education, teaching English language and arts./.

British Council to launch English teaching contest

Upper secondary teachers of English teaching in Vietnam will have an opportunity to take part in a competition on using a bilingual website.

The competition will be launched in Ho Chi Minh City on Sept. 17 by the British Council and the Ministry of Education and Training.

People, who pay concerns to the competition, can visit the website at www.teachingenglish.edu.vn and deadline for competitors to send their entries to the British Council will be Nov. 15.

Three first prize winners of the competition will receive trips to the UK and three second prize winners will visit Singapore.

According to Nguyen Vinh Hien, Deputy Minister of Education and Training, the site is a very useful source of materials for both teachers and learners of English in Vietnam, especially for upper secondary school sector, which can help meet the need for strengthening the English teaching and learning capacity as the country is implementing the project on teaching and learning foreign languages in the national education system in the 2008-2020 period.

British Council Deputy Director Simon Beardow said that the website is a great example of how British Council’s Access English project remains committed to working in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Training to provide teachers of English across Vietnam with access to quality teaching resources and opportunities to engage with other English teachers from around the world.

Access English is a four-year project developed and run by the British Council in partnership with education sectors in Indonesia, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

The project aims to provide support to changes in English Language Teaching in three areas: support for policy makers, lecturers and teachers.
