Hanoi animal bone smugglers indicted

Hanoi police have arrested six people belonging to a wildlife bone smuggling gang and filed charges against them.

Nguyen The Gioi, 54, and Nguyen Thuy Dung, 49, are the alleged gang bosses while four others are accused of buying and transporting bones taken from endangered animals.

The six have been charged with “breaking endangered species protection laws,” after the police arrested two men September 15 for transporting two sacks of suspected tiger and chamois bones in a car.

They confessed to buying the 21 kilograms of bones for VND140 million (US$7,200) from a man living in the capital’s Hoang Mai District.

Based on their confessions, the police searched several houses belonging to suspected smugglers and found 140 kilograms of bones, including eight full tiger skeletons, 134 kneecaps, and six skulls.

They also found three leopard skulls and two bear skulls as well as the bones of other animals.

Poachers in Vietnam are known to use animal bones to make “glue” or traditional medicines that are believed to cure many illnesses.
