Young inventors honoured for creativity

Seventy-four top entries from the 6 th Nationwide Creative Competition for Youth and Children will be displayed at the 7 th International Exhibition for Young Inventors (IEYI) on Dec. 16-18.

The announcement was made by the Vietnam Fund for Supporting Technological Creations (Vifotec) in Hanoi on Dec. 13.

Dr. Kim Chi, representing the creative competition’s jury, said the majority of entries this year focused on three main areas ­ – toys and entertainment facilities, environmental protection and economic development.

Top designs put safety as a priority or were mechanised and automated children’s toys, she said.

Vifotec’s director Le Duy Tien said IEYI, the first of its kind in Vietnam , aimed to promote creativity and allow Vietnamese children and youth to engage with international friends.

Young inventors, aged between 6 to 19, will present their inventions in 200 booths, focusing on five areas of learning aids, software, children’s toys, environmental protection and energy-saving measures, he said.

The event was expected to attract the participation of 400 inventors from 40 countries and organisations worldwide./.

29 Vietnamese youths to join regional ship

A two-week training course for 29 young Vietnamese who will attend the 37th Ship for Southeast Asian Youth Program (SSEAYP) 2010 opened in Hanoi on Monday.

The Vietnamese youth, together with young people from Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia will join the program to be held in Japan between October 25 and December 16.

As planned, the Vietnamese delegation, led by Phan Thi Thuy Tram, Deputy Director of the Northern Investment Promotion Centre, the Ministry of Planning and Investment, will organize the “Vietnam Day” on Dec. 5.

This year’s program, themed “Youth Participation in Social Activities,” will offer the participants opportunities to analyze their role in the socio-economic development of each country and discuss activities to improve their involvement.

SSEAYP is a regional youth exchange program, drawing the participation of ten ASEAN members and Japan.

Starting in 1974 following the initiative of the governments of Japan, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand, the program helps to strengthen friendship and mutual understanding between young Japanese and Southeast Asian people.

Youth lend a helping hand ahead of Ha Noi's birthday

HA NOI — More than 5,000 people participated in social activities on Saturday in the lead up to Ha Noi's millennium.

More than 100 young doctors from 25 hospitals provided free medical check-ups and treatment to more than 1,000 former volunteer youths, war invalids, family members of fallen combatants and poor children.

Students and young people donated more than 1,000 units of blood to the National Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

Others collected waste, rode bicycles around Ha Noi's Old Quarter to disseminate information about environmental protection, and removed illegal advertisements from streets in Hoang Mai and Cau Giay districts.

Meanwhile, 1,000 students of the Nhat Nam martial arts' school gave a public performance and another 1,000 young people showed off their dancing and singing talents.

On this occasion, the Ha Noi Union of Young People presented 1,000 national flags to officers and soldiers on the Truong Sa islands and the City's Young Entrepreneurs Association granted scholarships worth VND500 million (US$25,700) to 1,000 poor students. — VNS

On this occasion, the Hanoi Union of Young People presented 1,000 national flags to officers and soldiers on the Truong Sa islands and the city’s Young Entrepreneurs’ Association granted scholarships worth totally 500 million VND to 1,000 poor students./.

As many as 700 inventors and 200 stands from 40 different countries and organizations will take part in the event, announced the Vietnam Fund for Supporting Technological Creations (VIFOTEC) at a press briefing on Thursday.

The young Vietnamese inventors, aged between 6-19, will compete from September 21-26.

They will present their inventions in one of five areas, including learning aids, software, children’s toys, environmental protection and energy saving measures.

According to Le Xuan Thao, VIFOTEC’s permanent deputy chairman, Vietnam needs to encourage its young people to become more creative if the country wants to turn itself into an industrialized nation.

He said that previous competitions had revealed that Vietnamese children have a lot of potential and abilities compared with other nations. He also called on support from both international and domestic organizations and businesses to make the event a success.
