Sleeping driver blamed for accident

HCM CITY — A container truck collided head-on with a road tanker and then crashed into a house in HCM City early yesterday morning after the driver of the truck allegedly went to sleep at the wheel.

Both vehicles were extensively damaged and 15m of median-strip fence was demolished, but no one was injured, police said.

The accident happened on Ton Duc Thang Street after the container truck crashed through the fence, a police spokesman said.

Bird flu returns to Dak Lak ducks

DAK LAK — Bird flu has re-appeared in Dak Lak Province's Krong Bong District.

The lethal H5N1 virus was found in 500 ducks owned by a local farmer, according to the provincial Animal Health Department.

To prevent the epidemic from spreading, agencies sprayed chemicals and disinfected the breeding farm area.

It was the first reported case of bird flu since July.

Police seize vehicles in violations crackdown

HA NOI — On Tuesday, Ha Noi Road and Railway Traffic Police Department ordered police teams to strictly deal with violations after the city's birthday.

Police will deal with traffic violators after rush hours to prevent traffic jams.

Truck overturns in HCMC pothole mishap

A tank truck plunged into a pothole and overturned on a Ho Chi Minh City street Tuesday, causing panic in the area.

Le Manh Huong, 32, was driving the vehicle on Kha Van Can Street in Thu Duc District when its front left wheel entered the sand-covered hole and fell on its side.

Huong managed to open the door and jump out.

The truck hit a Lexus car in the mishap and damaged its back but there were no casualties.

The accident held up traffic for two hours until the truck was removed.

It is not known what cargo the vehicle was carrying.

Eyewitnesses said there was a drainpipe under the pothole. Tran Van Phuong, a local resident, told Tuoi Tre the pothole may have been caused by water leaking from the pipe.

He said workers from the Thu Duc Water Supply Joint Stock Company found leakages in the pipe a month ago after he informed them of a leakage in his house.

But the company has yet to fix it, he added.

Local authorities have promised to investigate the incident.

Last Saturday Ha Thi Tuyet Mai, 42, was run over by a truck when her motorcycle toppled after hitting a manhole cover on the same street.

She died on the spot but her 13-year-old son escaped unhurt after falling on the pavement.

Train rams container truck in Hanoi

A train hit a container truck in Hanoi Sunday morning, but there were no casualties.

The train, carrying 234 passengers and coming from Ho Chi Minh City, hit the truck as the latter passed railway tracks at a crossing with automatic barriers.

Luu Van Ly, the 34-year-old truck driver, said he only noticed the signal of a train coming when the truck was about to cross the track.

Ly said the truck was too heavy, weighing more than 46 tons, so he could not do anything then.

No one was killed as the accident pushed the truck 15 meters further and collapsed the wall of a nearby café. The truck driver and his assistant were slightly injured.

The cabins of the truck and the locomotive were damaged heavily, as were the barriers and signs in the area.

Dinh Ngoc Son, the train's guard, said the train was running at around 30 kilometers per hour when it hit the truck.

Son said the train had just sped up after stopping for 18 minutes following a clash with a resident. Otherwise, the crash would have been much more severe, he said.
