Japanese bank provides scholarships to Vietnam

The Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporations Global Foundation (SMBC) will provide 13,500 USD in scholarships for Vietnamese students, according to the Vietnam International Institute for Education (IIE).

This will be the fifth time that the SMBC Global Foundation has awarded scholarships to Vietnamese students.

The funding will be presented to nine students with outstanding academic records, a capacity for leadership and who actively participate in communal activities, from five universities around the country.

The lucky students will be selected from Hanoi National University , Ho Chi Minh City National University , Hanoi University , Ho Chi Minh City Economics University and Ho Chi Minh City Foreign Trade University .

First established in April 1994, with finance from SMBC Capital Markets Inc, the Foundation has provided scholarships to students from 25 universities in Asia, including China , Indonesia , Malaysia , Singapore , Thailand , the Philippines and Vietnam./.

Prudential grants IT scholarships to students

The Prudential Vietnam Life Insurance Company on Nov. 6 granted IT scholarships each worth 2,400 USD to 11 students who achieved outstanding results in the entrance exam of the FPT Aptech Institute.

The scholarship awardees will be enabled to participate in a two-year Aptech international programming course at the Hanoi-based FPT Aptech training centre.

Over the past three years, a total of 120 students from Hanoi, the northern port city of Hai Phong, the central provinces of Nghe An and Thanh Hoa, the central cities of Hue and Da Nang and the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho have received similar IT scholarships from the Prudence Fund.

Established in 2003 by the UK Prudential Insurance Group, the Prudence Fund has doled out 2.7 million USD (around 50 billion VND) to support IT, English and sport training programmes in Vietnam .

In addition, Prudential has also initiated many corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes with an annual budget of roughly 15 billion VND to back community activities in the country, focusing on education, support for children, social security and dissemination of financial knowledge for people./.

Prince Andrew gives scholarships to Vietnamese students

Prince Andrew, the UK’s Duke of York, announced an honorary scholarship fund for Vietnamese students at the British University Vietnam in Hanoi on Monday.

At the ceremony, Prince Andrew said that the arrival of the scholarship named after the prince himself is evidence of the UK’s wishes to develop a strategic partnership between the Vietnamese and UK governments, which reached new heights in September 2010.

President of the British University, Professor Graeme Davies said that the Prince Andrew scholarships will be granted to most outstanding Vietnamese senior secondary students who are enthusiastic about taking part in community activities.

The scholarships will be awarded to individuals who show potential of becoming leaders in government and business as well as academics, he added.

Three students will be selected to receive the scholarships, each worth US$30,500, next year, he said.

The Prudential Vietnam Insurance Company took the occasion to announce one scholarship for the most outstanding student to the British University Vietnam in 2011.

Founded on September 9, 2009, the wholly UK invested university grants London and Staffordshire certificates in five fields: accounting and business, accounting and finance, international business management, marketing management and banking and finance.

Hi-tech park donates English study materials

HCM CITY — The management board of Sai Gon Hi-tech Park (SHTP) on Monday donated English study materials valued at VND64 million (US$3,368) for Long Thanh My Elementary School in District 9.

The donation is a part of programme titled "For the development and happiness of the community" with a focus on educational improvement.

Panasonic awards three scholarships

Ha Noi — Panasonic Viet Nam yesterday granted three scholarships worth a total of US$240,000 to Vietnamese students.

The three recipients will each be enrolled in three-year masters programmes at universities in Tokyo and Osaka.

Nineteen Vietnamese students have been awarded the scholarships since 2003.

Ministry announces tuition-fee exemptions

HA NOI — The Education and Training Ministry has issued the official list of groups entitled to consessional tuition fees for the 2010-11 academic year to rectors of universities, colleges and vocational training schools.

They are descendants of people who devoted their lives to Viet Nam's revolution; students whose parents live in remote areas or the highlands as well as orphans, homeless, disabled, minority and markedly poor students. – VNS

Over 200 students receive Vallet scholarships

French professor Odon Vallet presents 219 scholarships to outstanding students from south central cities and provinces in Danang city

French professor Odon Vallet presented 219 scholarships worth VND1.1 billion (US$56,686) to outstanding students and pupils from five south central cities and provinces in Danang city Tuesday.

Scholarships, each worth VND7.5 million ($386.5) were granted to 34 students from Danang University and Quy Nhon University while the remaining 185 students from Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Binh Dinh, Phu Yen and Danang each received VND5 million ($257.7).

This is the 8th year that Vietnamese students in the central region have received such scholarships, which aim to encourage disadvantaged students excelling in study.

As a doctor of law in the France-based Sorbonne University, Odon Vallet devoted all of his family inheritance, worth 100 million euros ($127 million), to grant scholarships to poor students in France and Vietnam.

Since 2001, through Meet Vietnam organisation, Odon Vallet scholarships have been awarded to thousands of Vietnamese students. In 2010, the scholarships worth VND12 billion ($618,397) will be granted to 2,150 students nationwide.
