Gov't provides VND335b for disaster-hit provinces

HA NOI — Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung signed a decision on Friday entrusting the Finance Ministry to extract VND335 billion (US$17.1) from the State budget and 8,600 tonnes of rice from national reserves to support provinces stricken by natural disasters.

The beneficiary provinces include: Quang Tri; Thua Thien-Hue; Quang Nam; Quang Ngai; Binh Dinh; Phu Yen; Khanh Hoa; Ninh Thuan; Binh Thuan; Dak Lak; and Thai Nguyen.

The PM also asked the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs to continue to maintain a close watch on the scarcity of food and hunger in flood-hit provinces and to keep him informed.

Provincial People's Committees Chairmen will be responsible for effectively managing and using the allocated cash and rice, and are expected to mobilise their local budgets and other legal financial resources to surmount the consequences of natural disasters, according to the decision.

Dung also signed a decision on Friday to provide lifeboats, chemicals and vaccines for Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Thua Thien-Hue, and Quang Ngai provinces. — VNS

Natural disasters have big impact in October

Natural disasters have big impact in October Natural disasters left 173 dead or missing and injured 168 others in the month to October 21, reported the Statistics General Department.

Damages were estimated at over 8.5 trillion VND, of which the central province of Ha Tinh alone suffered 5.2 trillion VND in losses from typhoon Megi.

The other two hard-hit central provinces of Quang Binh and Nghe An were reported as suffering damages worth some 1.9 trillion VND and 1.2 trillion VND, respectively.

In an effort to help victims recover, the Prime Minister has ordered the disbursement of 660 billion VND from the State hedge budget and free supply of 11,000 tonnes of rice from the national rice reserves for disaster-hit areas.

In general, relief aid from various sources totalled almost 700 billion VND, over 14,000 tonnes of rice, over 153 tonnes of instant noodles, 58,000 boxes of mineral water bottles and many other daily necessities.

Weather forecasters have warned of further complicated developments of natural disasters during the rest of the year, asking responsible agencies to stay alert and strictly follow the Prime Minister’s recent urgent guidelines on storm and flood control./.

Hanoi marks Int’l Day for Disaster Reduction

Hanoi and a number of other cities in Vietnam need to register in the list of cities that are adapting to natural disasters around the globe.

Dao Xuan Hoc, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development stated this at a ceremony to mark International Day for Disaster Reduction in Hanoi on October 13, with 400 representatives from ministries, government departments and international organisations in Vietnam taking part.

Earlier, in April, 2009, Federica Ranghieri, an environmental specialist on climate change in East Asia and the Pacific Region for the World Bank (WB), announced that the WB had chosen Hanoi, Dong Hoi and Can Tho as pilot cities for the climate change adaptation campaign.

This year, UN organisations and international non-governmental organisations under the Joint Advocacy Network Initiative (JANI) also selected Hanoi to launch the event.

The representatives at the ceremony agreed that Vietnam is among one of the countries in the world to be the hardest hit by climate changes, citing the recent flash floods in the central region from October 1-5.

With the theme “Making Cities Resilient: My City is Getting Ready”, the campaign was launched by the UN to raise the publics awareness of the importance of preventing and mitigating natural disasters, which will help with the city’s sustainable development./.
