Coach crash leaves 16 injured in Delta region

LONG AN — Punctures to two tyres on a 16-seat coach left 16 passengers injured on a stretch of the HCM City – Trung Luong Highway in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta's Long An Province on Monday.

Seven out of 16 injured who were taken to Ben Luc District's Hospital and Cho Ray Hospital have been discharged.

Doctors save man crushed by water tank

KON TUM — Doctors from the Central Highlands Kon Tum Province's General Hospital saved a man with multiple injuries who had been crushed by a 1,000-litre water tank, said Tran Ai, director of the hospital.

The patient, Tran Van Tuan, 41, from Kon Tum City was hospitalised after his small intestine was torn and two bones of his spinal column were broken.

Tuan is recovering and is expected to leave hospital within the next week.

Vinamilk awards scholarships

HA NOI — Viet Nam Dairy Products Joint Stock Company – Vinamilk yesterday provided VND1.5 billion ($78,000) in scholarships to talented youngsters over the 2010 – 2011 school year.

The company will grant 1,000 scholarships, worth VND1 million ($50) each, to outstanding primary school students and also fund the construction of school libraries.

Vinamilk has granted VND16 billion ($800,000) in its annual programme over the past eight years.

Veterinarian tries to steal from bird flu fund

TIEN GIANG — The Mekong Delta Tien Giang Province's Animal Health Department has decided to sack Vo Thanh Truc, a veterinarian in Cho Gao District for attempting to appropriate VND70 million ($3,500) from a local fund earmarked for bird flu and blue-ear pig disease prevention.

Truc, 36, colluded with his father to falsify documents to embezzle the money.

His father, also a veterinarian, had also been dismissed for similar offence in October. — VNS

Bus collision injures ten in central highlands

Ten people were critically injured when two buses collided in the central highlands province of Lam Dong Thursday morning.

Le Minh Dung, one of the rescuers, said the accident happened on the Chuoi Mountain Pass when a bus from the adjacent province of Dak Lak, heading for Dalat Town, crashed into another bus going in the opposite direction.

Ten passengers from both buses suffered multiple injuries, according to initial reports.

Investigations into the accident’s cause are now underway.

In other news, 18 people, including eight women and a child, were injured when the bus carrying them capsized in the northern province of Ha Tinh on Wednesday.

Witnesses said the accident took place when it was raining and that the road surface was slippery. The bus was overtaking a truck at high speed when the driver lost control.

The injured people were then rushed to a local hospital, and the remaining 20 passengers caught other buses to reach their destination, according to Ha Phi Hoang, deputy chief of the traffic police department in the province’s Ky Anh District.

Seven injured as home helper assaults sleeping family with hammer

A home helper in Ho Chi Minh City brutally assaulted seven members of his boss' family with a hammer on Sunday before trying to kill himself with it.

Police are investigating the apparaently unprovoked, irrational act of violence on the family of Le Cong Quang, 39, who runs an advertising firm.

Among the victims were Quang's wife, his 13-month-old son and his niece, a 19-year-old college student who was visiting the family, local news website VietNamNet said.

Eyewitnesses said they saw Duong Van Nuoi, 30, carry a hammer around 0.3 meters long covered with blood after hearing shouts and cries from the office-cum-residence of advertising firm Huong Sinh.

The attack took place at six in the morning when most of the victims were asleep.

Huynh Hoai Nhan, a 17-year-old worker of the firm, said he survived as he managed to hide behind a door.

Nhan said Nuoi hammered the company’s owner unconscious and other members of his family were severely injured.

“I still don’t know what made him act that brutally,” Nhan told the police.

According to workers of the company, Nuoi was on good terms with the family. He had also gone to a café with the family the previous night.

The injured have been admitted at the Cho Ray Hospital. Three of them, Quang, his wife Phan Thi Hong Chi and his niece Le Thuy Ngan, needed emergency surgery, doctors said.

HCMC police have arrested Nuoi for further investigation. He was also injured as hammering his own head after attacking everyone.

Nuoi has been with the family for two months.
