Hospitals to get waste disposal facilities

HA NOI — Sixteen hospitals in Ha Noi's suburban districts will be equipped with their own solid waste incinerators through a project approved and funded by the city's People's Committee.

The hospitals use solid waste treatment facilities which have been degraded through continuous use over time, according to the Department of Health, the designated project investor.

Most of the hospitals that will benefit from this project are in districts that were once part of Ha Tay Province before it was swallowed up by the expansion of Ha Noi. Duc Giang General Hospital in inner Long Bien District will also benefit from the project.

The VND29 billion (US$1.4 million) project will be implemented over the next two years.

The Department of Health is mapping out further project details in terms of the design, capacity and technology of the incinerators which will be evaluated by the Department of Science and Technology before any purchases are made.

The department manages 40 city-level hospitals, 24 of which have signed solid waste removal contracts with the city's Urban Environment Company for disposal at an incinerator in Tu Liem District.

Twenty private hospitals in the city, which do not have wastes treatment facilities, also have waste removal contracts with the company. — VNS
