Police rescue 32 slave workers in Central Highlands farm

Police in the central Quang Nam province said Monday they had rescued 32 slave workers from a Central Highlands farm.

They also brought the body of a worker, who died from malaria, back home.

The 33 workers, who came from Quang Nam’ Phuoc Chanh commune, were among 45 people hired by Do Ngoc Lan, 44, to plant acacia hybrid (a kind of thorn trees) at a farm in the Central Highlands province of Dak Nong.

They were offered VND1.8-2.1 million (US$92-107) a month, but after they arrived at the farm, they had to work in three months without payment.

Their working and living conditions were terrible, according to police. One of them, Ho Van Chuong, had malaria but he was not treated.

Some of the workers fled the farm and reported the case to the local authorities.

Phuoc Son district’s police sent a working group to Dak Nong and rescued the workers.

Do Ngoc Lan was hired by Dak Lak Paper Material Factory to recruit workers for a project to plant trees for paper production. He was paid VND100,000 ($5.1) each time he recruited a worker.
