Police arrest blogger for slander

Ministry of Public Security police have arrested a blogger for posting entries with “distorting information” about a high-ranking official, Cao Minh Nhan, deputy chief of the ministry’s Anti-Crime Police Department, told Tuoi Tre Tuesday.

Le Nguyen Huong Tra, 35, who is known as Co Gai Do Long in her blog, was accused of “abusing democracy and freedom of speech rights, damaging the interests of the State and legal rights of organizations and individuals.”

Nhan said the blogger admitted her slandering acts, but further investigations were still under way.

Following her arrest, police searched her house in Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Binh District and seized her laptop and other related documents last Saturday.

Police said Tra had published some entries on her blog with damaging information about the family of a deputy minister of public security since early this month, which affects the reputation of people involved.

In 2007, she was taken to court by Phuong Thanh, a famous pop singer, for posting entries with allegedly falsified information about her and her live show. However, a Ho Chi Minh City court then announced to suspend the case after two trials due to proceeding problems.

Tra is a freelance reporter of several HCMC-based newspapers. Her blog is listed among the most viewed blogs in Vietnam, with 23 million page views the last time it is checked.
