Dao Xuan Hoc, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development stated this at a ceremony to mark International Day for Disaster Reduction in Hanoi on October 13, with 400 representatives from ministries, government departments and international organisations in Vietnam taking part.
Earlier, in April, 2009, Federica Ranghieri, an environmental specialist on climate change in East Asia and the Pacific Region for the World Bank (WB), announced that the WB had chosen Hanoi, Dong Hoi and Can Tho as pilot cities for the climate change adaptation campaign.
This year, UN organisations and international non-governmental organisations under the Joint Advocacy Network Initiative (JANI) also selected Hanoi to launch the event.
The representatives at the ceremony agreed that Vietnam is among one of the countries in the world to be the hardest hit by climate changes, citing the recent flash floods in the central region from October 1-5.
With the theme
“Making Cities Resilient: My City is Getting Ready”, the campaign was
launched by the UN to raise the publics awareness of the importance of
preventing and mitigating natural disasters, which will help with the
city’s sustainable development./.
